Sunny Winter Day

This painting was started at the Thursday Morning Painting Group here in Yarnell, AZ. It was my first time to attend. I've always told myself and others that I don't like to paint with people around. The last time I said it aloud I heard myself claiming something I no longer want to create in my life. I finished this painting the next day and I like it. I can see the difference of ones painted outside chasing the sun and this one where all the shadows stay put.

There are paths all through the land around Vanessa's house created by havalina and other wild critters roaming through. My dog Zig is my painting buddy and loves all the wonderful sights and smells. She's a great dog pal. I think she liked this particular spot a lot.

This is my second Yarnell painting in Vanessa's backyard. I did not succeed in capturing the landscape I saw with my eyes. The shadows moved too fast for me to keep up while I was figuring out how to paint the prevalent dried dead limbs. But, I love that I played with my pallet knife and persevered. I'm accumulating experience/knowledge - I can feel it.

I'm on a new artistic adventure. I've come to Yarnell, Arizona to deepen my relationship to my creative self - create art and music, love my family and friends and discover more about how this strange landscape of granite bolders and scrubby trees and bushes open my creative heart.
This is my first painting here (painted Christmas afternoon.) My friend Vanessa's home and studio are surrounded by views that thrill me. This is one of my favorites that I'm sure I will paint many times as the shadows and light change all day long with the sun rising and setting.

I visited my Mother. She is the dearest woman in my life. My Mother's nature is loving, accepting, generous, helpful and she has a sweet wonderful sense of humor that flashes over her face still, through the dementia that has changed everything about her life. She was a loving helpful daughter, sister, cousin, aunt, friend, mother of four children and devoted and hard working wife. My Mother is an amazing woman.

In getting my house ready to sell I moved my easel and computer out of my master bedroom (that tells you a little too much about me) into the smallest bedroom in our Briardale house. I managed to only paint one small Slice of Life painting in that room. I did start this painting but brought it to the Nueva Street Gallery to finish. It dawned on me recently that we used that bedroom very little in the last eight years. Maybe it's not lined up so well with the creative forces that be. There are just some places I've been where I feel "plugged in" and buzzing with energy and creativity. Even though the Briardale house was a great place for me, my three children, their friends and a past relationship, I'm ready to venture out of my suburban life there. This will probably be the last painting created in that house. I'm ready life! Where shall I paint next?

I took a picture of some beautiful cannas on the river behind the old Pearl Brewery. When I was looking closer at the photo I noticed some tiny bees among the flowers. I zoomed in and saw the painting. I tried to use the paint more like I use pastels with layers of color on color. Fun.

My friends Marianne and John and I visited the new mural made from my Arneson River Theater painting. Each little tile was a colorful piece of art itself. It's located outside in a lovely patio area at the Franklin Park Sonterra Senior Living Center in San Antonio, TX. (Read a bit more about it.) Afterward we celebrated the occasion with dinner at Chuy's - yum.

My daughter, her friend and I visited four lavender farms participating in the 2011 Blanco, Texas Lavender Festival. I had my camera in hand hoping for some reference photos for paintings. The lavender was late in blooming, for lack of rain, so I didn't get the lavender photos I was hoping for. But, I hit the jackpot when I spied these beautiful longhorns who were pets at the Wimberley Lavender Farm. After asking permission to photograph them, I got to get close aand personal. With only an electric wire between us, they all looked right at me and said, "I'm ready for my close-up!" while chewing happily on fresh hay.

I went scouting for painting references a few weeks ago with my friend Marianne. One of the places we walked is the new extension of the San Antonio River that is by the old Pearl Brewery and flows behind the San Antonio Art Museum. I spotted this bird in a beautiful little pond with a waterfall behind the Art Museum. He was so beautiful and statuesque that I did a double take. He let me take several pictures of him before he stretched his head way up and looked like a different bird. He was fun to paint as a slice but I think he probably deserves a large painting in the future.

Since posting this painting I Googled this guy and he is a Yellow-Crowned Night Heron - and a very handsome one at that.

This is Watching For Spring Rain revisited. When painting with oil was new it was a new concept when my sister told me, "Just paint over it." I have since done this many times. I'll finish a painting and keep looking at it and realize it's just not right so I just paint over it or part of it. That's what I did here. My sister would also say, "Don't touch it, just paint something else!" Sometimes I just can't. I have to try and fix what bothers me. I like it now. I grew up on a farm in Collinsville, Oklahoma with cows, shetland ponies, chickens, dogs, etc. It was a great place to play. We had a holstein cow with a heart on her forehead, named Gertie, that let me and my three siblings ride on her. So, I have a very soft spot in my heart for cows.

This photo was taken by Heather, a photographer for the Air Force who found me at the Nueva Street Gallery painting last Wednesday. She needed a subject for a class she was taking and I was it. My Alpine, Arizona friend and I took some great long drives in the forests around where she lives. This painting is from a photo I took on our way to "The Blue," as the locals call it. It's a little town named Blue in the Apache Forest. It was a beautiful cloudy day and I loved the icy blue bushes along the side of the road. I tried to find out what the name of them was but couldn't find it in the "Plants of Arizona" book. If anyone knows, let me know!

I'm trying out this new "floater frame" on my latest Texas landscape. It's nice in that you see all of the canvas. With a regular frame you loose about 1/4 inch all the way around. I painted all the way around the edge of the canvas because it is visible in this frame.

Working the Gallery

I'm working the gallery (Susan Carlin's Art Studio and Gallery) this beautiful Spring-like San Antonio, Texas Saturday. The sun is shining, it's 70 degrees, and the wind is blowing the dry leaves around.

There are three artists represented here: my sister Susan, Bonnie Mann and me. We all have original paintings, prints and cards for sale.

A happily "just engaged" couple from Albuquerque, New Mexico came in this morning and took away one of my Arneson River Theater prints as a souvenir. Lots of happy people out roaming the river today.

Off To Europe

I dropped my son Lyle at the Airport this morning. He is off to Los Angeles to meet up with his band, The Faceless, and then they're off to Europe for a five week tour.

What does this have to do with art? Being a part of my children's lives is the most creative thing I've ever done. I didn't paint a thing over the holidays but I did take some reference pictures.

One of the most important things I did this holiday season was to connected with some old and new friends. I was reminded that the essence of me is music. So besides painting, going to school full-time this Spring, I'll be playing the piano and remembering that I'm a songwriter.

Here is wishing everyone a wonderful new year filled with events that alter and illuminate our lives.

After the launch of my new website, running errands and various other oh so important activities yesterday and making necessary tweeks to the website this morning, it was finally time to paint.

I set up my new shadow box and walked around the house looking for something to put in it. The light bulb was on the kitchen counter and voila! NEXT!

I made the decision to remove the many older personal webpages on my website and replace them (for now) with art only. I would like to hear any comments you may have on the new design and content.

An Amazing Day

It's hard for me to let the day end. What an amazing day. Some days are just like that--packed full of "events that alter and illuminate our lives." Here's the low down.

It started with hours at the computer - I'm rebuilding my website. Late morning my daughter and I went to see the newly released movie, Julie & Julia. I so related to Julie as she began her blog and reached out into the world not knowing where her words and efforts would take her. A must see movie.

During the previews I dug in my purse and wrote down a quote from the new movie Fame, "All the things you want to change about yourself and keep secret, they're your power! It's who you are." I just love knowing and being reminded of that.

When I got home Susan (sister) called to let me know she posted a notice about my art and blog on her blog. She's got many wonderful fellow artists and fans that visited my blog today and left encouraging comments of which I am greatful. Thank you all sooooo much!

I dropped by Susan's to pick up paints and paintings and I locked my keys and purse in the car. Not 10 minutes later my friend Karen showed up and gave Stella and I a ride home where I found another key--barely an inconvenience at all.

Kayley and I were preparing to do another round of t-shirt silk screening this evening when I got a call from Marianne. All she said was, "Can I come over? I have something I want to show you."

My dear friends Marianne and her husband John showed up 30 minutes later with a great surprise. Yes, the shadow box. John built me a shadow box to be able to do my daily paintings. It moves up and down and I'll be able to control the light and shadows. Thanks to Carol Marine, who posted a picture of the shadow box her husband built, John was able to use it as a reference. I'm so thrilled I can hardly stand it.

So thanks to my daughter Stella, who got me out of the house today, and thanks to Karen who showed up at the perfect moment and gave Stella and I a ride home, and thanks to my sister Susan who included me on her blog, and thanks to all the folks who visited my blog today and especially those who left me encouraging comments, and thanks to Kayley, my artist friend who is spontaneous and fun, (we silk screened 30 t-shirts this evening!) and thanks to my friends Marianne and John who surprised me with a wonderful shadow box I would have never built myself, and thanks to Carol Marine who posted a picture of her shadow box, and thanks to the universe that continually spins my hopes and dreams into reality. What an amazing day.

Kayley's Bliss

On July 4th, Susan and I put all the kids, boyfriend and girlfriends in the hot seat and took photos of them separately. We got some great portrait shots of each of them.

Kayley (Lyle's girlfriend) and I have been spending some time together the last few weeks exploring silk screening. We've had so much fun and I've gotten to know her better. For Kayley's photo I had her hold up her hands as part of a portrait I had seen in my mind. "Kayley's Bliss" is the finished portrait.

If you knew Kayley, this would make sense. She's an artist who, in her swirling universe, is sprouting new creations everyday. Her tattoos include the tree on her chest. She considers her body another canvas to create on.

I am so fortunate to have many young artists and musicians around who inspire me to dig down into the creative hovel. Thank you swirling universe!!

My trend of painting everyday continues. This little 8x10 oil on panel was done yesterday while listening to Lyle lay down drum tracks in his studio. Life is good, very good.

South Texas Landscapes - SOLD

Yesterday I painted at home for four hours and completed the South Texas Highway painting, then painted at Susan's for two and a half hours and painted the South Texas Fields and Clouds.

All three kids remember our trip to the coast when we pulled over so I could take pictures of the clouds. Stella was only 4, Jake 6 and Lyle 7. One of the memorable moments of our trip was a big turtle in the road. We stopped the car and Joe jumped out to move it and when he picked it up of course it peed and scared him to death. We all laughed. Although she was only 4, Stella can tell you the story of slamming her thumb in the door. Ouch. Even with her smashed thumb we managed to have a great time.
I've done both these paintings before with pastels but it felt really good get gooey in the oils, stick with bright colors and not get too tight.

Stack of Whites - SOLD

One of mine and Susan's favorite artists to watch paint is Helen Van Wyk. She used to have a TV show but now Susan has many of the episodes on VHS. Her lessons include a painting of a white pitcher, eggs and egg shells. It inspired me to paint the stack of white cups on my white kitchen counter up against a white background. Everyone had to stumble around the easel and supply table in the kitchen (sorry.)

Patty's Art Revival & Tulips - SOLD

I am painting, again. This time it's the oils that call me.

My unconscious art block broke on June 31, 2009 after a reunion with my dear friend Marianne who worked with me using EFT. I haven't gone a day without painting since.

That was a Tuesday night and Wednesday morning I gathered my supplies and went to Susan's house (sister) and she made a spot for me in her studio to paint right beside her. She is a constant source of encouragement.

That same week, while painting at Susan's, she had a call from one of the artists that share her downtown studio and gallery saying that she would be leaving. Susan turned to me and asked if I wanted her spot.

So here I am in Susan Carlin's Art Studio and Gallery located in downtown San Antonio's historic village called La Villita. This is my second Monday. I hung two pastels here last week and Susan sold my tulip pastel. Yeah!

I'll be learning to post some pics of the things I'm working on. I've finished several paintings and there are a couple worth posting later today when I get home.
